Painters, sculptors, and printmakers I talk to say that the only way they got anywhere with their art was through plain hard work. Don’t paint to perform, but pain to learn. Or even better, don’t learn to paint, paint to learn.

People talk about talent and expression and creativity, but most of the time, it’s about getting up in the morning, going into the studio when you really don’t feel like it, picking up the tool and making that first mark. Talent and expression and creativity will be there but none of it will grow if you don’t simply do the work.

“WHEN YOU LEARN TO MAKE THINGS WITH YOUR HANDS YOU BEGIN TO AWAKEN AN AWARENESS OF THE BEAUTY AND VALUE OF THE THINGS IN YOUR LIFE. HANDMAKING TEACHES US ABOUT SLOWNESS: THE ANTIDOTE TO BREVITY AND EFFICIENCY. IT SHOWS US, THROUGH THE PATIENCE AND SKILLFULNESS OF OUR OWN HANDS WHAT GOES INTO A THING.”

“The experienced painter hops around the palette taking a little of this and layering it on top of a little of that without a thought for what the pigment is called. This is what you should aim for, practicing with your colors so that you know them well is the way to achieve it. Bear in mind that, however many ground rules you learn, every artist develops their own technique, finding by trial and error what is best for them.”
